Congratulations
to a Phenomenal Woman

Not everyone is cut from the same cloth but that does not say that you have to succumb to what society says your cloth is. You can change your lifestyle and what would normally be the norm in your society beginning with yourself. Here is my story!

Growing up in a Single Parent home, I did not understand what it meant. I did not know what a father was, or that kids had one of those. (Laughs) I remember in primary school around father’s day we would have to make cards, my card would always go to my mother without further thought. I respect my mother’s choice back then to not talk about my father due to the harsh situation that involved the relationship between him and my mother and not wanting to be a part of my life then. She saved me a lot of stress and heart ache for a dad that would never care about me.

Being a product of a Single parent home, as I look back meant that we had struggles for money and necessities. My mother placed her life on hold and ensured that I was brought up with dignity and respect in my community. I remember days when we did not have enough to go by and she would feed me and remain undone. When I went to school, or anywhere, nobody would have a clue that we did not have enough, because she would always have me neat and well put together. I can never disrespect her or not love her unconditionally for the undying love she bestowed towards me being our sole provider.

My father, or as I often refer to him now “sperm donor” showed up on our door step for the first time in my life at fifteen years of age. My step-sister grandfather had died and he used the opportunity to come back to Trinidad on visit. He resided and still resides in Brooklyn, New York. I was speechless when I saw him and ran away in shock because he was the splitting image of me in a male form, and although I never physically saw him I knew who he was.  I hid for about an hour and realized that my nightmare was real because he sat like nobody’s business chatting with my aunt. I came out and he acted like he was the best man since whenever, I was always a no bullshit type of kid so I read through him, he waited for my mother to come home and asked her for me to come meet my step-sister at the wake. After he left Trinidad, I am now twenty-five and I am yet to see him again. We do not have a cordially relationship because he cannot accept his wrongs, apologize and now that I am an adult move forward. I will not stand for anyone disrespecting my mother to make them look good.

My mother continued to struggle as being the sole provider for us. She would always tell me, “with an education, nobody can ever take it away from you, and our only way out of this poverty is with an education.” That motto transcended in me, although whilst I was younger I did not quite understand it and rebelled a bit; I never made her shame and always vowed to make her proud.  She is my rock and my role model because whilst taking care of me she still did her CXC O’level subjects on the side and got a proper job as a Supplemental Police. If was not for her strength, and her ability to fight against the odds, and stand for what was right, I could have been a victim of my environment. I could have been what society expected, maybe with a teenage pregnancy, illiteracy or being dependant on a man or society.

Many people have stigma against children growing up in single parent homes, and believe that they cannot do as great as those growing up with both parents. But once the parent has that drive like my colleague Oliva Andrews to make a difference in your generation and ensure that cycle does not repeat itself, I know it would be a better tomorrow. I see women who are in these situations as phenomenal beings, because it takes greater strength and spirituality to rise above.

Bless
I am not a product of my Environment

I lived Laventille Road for 28 years of my life. I saw many persons with whom I would have grown up with or went to school with even my step brother die because of crime, because they choose to go down the road of cheating, stealing and other nefarious activities to make it the quick way in life.

WE need to put first the things first those of us that have children we need to teach them respect for others, for the property of others, and general manners. I attended a PTA meeting in my 3 year old's school and the teacher was disgusted by how many children are now raising their parents and how little these children did not care about authority.

There were a couple children that she had problems with, including one student who if she instructed him to stand, sit, read or do any work his answer was no. This could potentially be the making of a child that grows up to be broken. We need to help our kids, not make excuses for them and their behaviour

They need to start acting like the adult once more and not let them lead us because we are just setting them up for failure. When they grow up and realize that everything does not go the way they want it to they sometimes become angry and disenchanted.I choose the long way even though my father was not a physical part of my life and my mother died when I was only nine years old. I believe that we can all make it with a good solid foundation we all can achieve.

This is why I try to provide a good foundation for my little girl. I thank God everyday that my mother had the hind sight to ensure that I knew who he was from an early stage in my life because he is my rock.

Even though I strived for excellence and would have encountered some obstacles along the way and I am still trying. I now live Picton Laventille for the past year and as simple as saying good morning and good evening I have earned the respect of those in my neighbourhood, how do I know this they actually came out and told me.

Always no matter what or where you go show others respect you never know who is paying attention and when that individual/s may be the one who you need when you are in a situation where help is needed.

  • Avoid those people that seem to attract negativity or hang out with individuals that are not upstanding citizens because you would not know when you became one of them.
  • Inspire of the names people may call you like pricey, fake, and the foolish term white remember what your end goal is which it to rise above what you see around.
  • Respect everyone because in the end they respect you it is just that they do not know how to get out of the situation that they got themselves into, so they believe that they world is out to get them.
  • Do not ever forget where you came from because it is a big part of your development and your driving source of an inspiration to do better for yourself.
  • Try to give back to your community in whatever way possible, it does not have to be monitory, but help others to know that they too can make it show them how they can achieve this.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS!

Walking into a room for the first time you would realize that all eyes are on you. Most people observe everything from your clothing to the personality you gave off. An important note would be to make sure your appearance and attitudes are in check when making first impressions anywhere. Very often people are falsely judged merely upon their first appearance.

Presenting yourself appropriately is major. Keep in mind where you are going and what type of crowd you are most likely to meet. You do not want to stand out as being odd. Choosing the appropriate style of clothing and accessories will determine your acceptance or rejection.

You want to give a strong and positive version of yourself. Grooming is a huge part of your presentation for both males and females. Take that extra effort to perfect your style to create a finished look.

Stay calm and collective! Be yourself, and do not put on an act or try to be something that you are not personally comfortable with. This shows up as a big red flag to the person or persons you are about to meet. Your individuality can help make your first impressions successful once you keep in mind to be appropriate for the situation.

Happy First Impressions!

CHIKUNGUNYA!!

www.entornointeligente.com
So in the midst of the excitement of starting my blog I got a major setback. I was unable to go to work or to some of my classes due to this setback. I GOT CHIKUNGUNYA!! Yes I did. So here I was thinking last Friday while working on setting up and publishing my blog, that I was just merely tired and in need of rest. However, it was the virus that snuck up on me and threw me down. So one week later with severe pains and other associate symptoms from this Chikungunya disease I made a conscious decision to write a piece on it.

What is Chikungunya? It is a viral disease transmitted by humans by infected mosquitoes. Wait, it is not just mosquitoes but aedes aegypti mosquitoes! Yes it is the same type of mosquito that transmits dengue fever. I was apparently bitten by one of these mosquitoes.

Research has shown that this virus has no cure. There are many symptoms which include:

  • fever
  • body pains
  • joint pains
  • muscle pains
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • swelling of joints
  • conjunctivitis
  • fatigue
  • rash.
  • etc

So I pretty much had almost all of those symptoms.

What can be done to ease these symptoms? The Chikungunya disease as said before has no cure but, the associated symptoms can be treated for and the virus would cure itself over time.

For the pains, panadeine and muscle relaxers can be used. Papaya leaves, which is horrible in taste but very effective in the fight against the Chikungunya. The rash, THE RASH!!!!! Okay, I was afraid when I saw my whole body covered with the freakish looking rash. It is small reddish spots or bumps that last for two to five days. I used ‘piriton’ which is an allergy pill, ‘keto plus shampoo’ and ‘commed medicated soap’ to assist with the itching of the skin and the discomfort. All of the treatment was either given to me by my doctor or recommended by him. Oh! I forgot to mention that I was injected twice on my buttocks…. Yes I was, all in the name of Chikungunya.

Plenty rest and keeping the body hydrated is necessary.

As I sit here in pain, I pray for everyone that has this Chikungunya to find some ease or relieve. For those who do not have it, please look out for the symptoms and protect yourself against it.

Weight Management Tips

Balancing both the calories your using and burning helps to keep you at your ideal weight. With a willing mind, losing weight can be made simple. When your body uses more calories than you eat, weight loss is more rapid. Calories are a measure of the energy in the food you eat and utilized when your body engages in physical activities. With that said your body requires a healthy diet and physical activity to control your weight.

TAKE ACTION!!!

Make a promise to eat well and move around more. Tell your friends and family about your decision to get extended support. Lose weight overtime slowly and remember that the less calories your intake and more calories you burn would aid in your weight maintenance journey.

TALK TO A DOCTOR!!!

If you need to loose excess weight, seeking a doctor's advise is important. Your doctor will explain your options along with any pre-existing medical conditions.

SET PRACTICAL GOALS!!!

Begin with small goals, like:
  • I want to lose 2 pounds per week
  • I will add 15 to 30 minutes of physical activities to my routine daily
  • I will avoid overeating or unhealthy eating habits

KEEP A FOOD AND ACTIVITY DIARY

 Write down everything:
  •  When/What/How you eat
  • Your physical activity

KEEP MOVING!!!

In order to balance your intake with your output of calories used:

  • Aim for 30 minutes per day, every week
  • You can move in shorter periods throughout the day (Make a block around the office at least twice per day)
  • 10 minutes of walking burns at least 50 calories

    COUNT YOUR CALORIES!!!

    • Read your labels - There are nutrition facts and how much calories in everything on the labels
    • Choose low fat or fat free versions of your favourite foods
    • Drink more water
    • When you eat out ask for the dressings or sauces on the side, so you can control your intake.

    S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Lifestyle changes are often some of the most difficult things to incorporate in our daily lives. However, if we never make an effort, then things will never happen. When we realize that we have a particular problem or issue that requires changes in our current lifestyle the onus is on us to get up and make it happen.

Sometimes we require guidelines or strategic plans to help us along the way. S.M.A.R.T. Goals provides a guide that you can use to detail the information for your change and make it your goal.Using Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Oriented Goals to achieve it.

Specific goals are those that are to the point and directed to what you want to achieve. So if your goal is to loose weight, pick up exercising, start a new hobby, improve your overall health, learn a new skill or any other personal interest, be specific about it.

Measurable goals are when you place deadlines and state how you intend to achieve your goals. Being measurable helps to place boundaries. So if you want to add exercise as your goal, keeping a daily log to track your steps, and timing your walks  to see your progress will be beneficial.

Attainable goals will be what that makes it happen. Finding a structure will help to put things together and assist you in achieving your goals.

Make Realistic goals! Please do not try to hang your hat higher than your head can reach. Plan your your goal and do what you are certain that you can achieve within a specific time.

Set a date to start and to finish your goal. Being Time Oriented helps because you have a set deadline to challenge yourself.  You can also plan certain times to level up and pace yourself while pursuing your goal.

    SAMPLE of a S.M.A.R.T. Goal

Specific------------- Walk for 30 minutes per day 5 times per week

Measurable-------- Time walks, log daily routines

Attainable---------- Find someone with to walk with

Realistic------------ Walk 5 to 10 minutes each day first
                                 thing in the morning

Time Oriented---- Reach to 30 minute sessions by the
fourth week and walk for the full five
                                 days per week
